Eee-Ow

For such a beautiful place where tourists come to relax, Hawai'i has an extremely violent past. Today, the 'Iao (pronounced Eee-Ow) Needle is a pretty place overgrown with tropical fauna. But in 1790 Kamehameha the Great decided to invade Maui (again), and he and his forces slaughtered so many people that the stream running through the 'Iao Valley was clogged with bodies. 

A mile or so down the road from the 'Iao Needle is Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens, dedicated to the immigrant cultures who populated Maui. The park is favored by feral cats who are unapproachably adorable.
